President’s Letter

August 2009

Greeting ETGS Members:

I am Hal K. Bertram your new ETGS president for the upcoming 2009-2010 year. I look forward to the opportunity to serve as your president in the upcoming year. Your Vice President is Chad Weisenburger, your Secretary is Keith Trasko and the always enduring Bob Timmer is your Tresaury. We have a great schedule of activities in store for the society this year.

I want to first congratulate Rick Turner on a great 2008- 2009 year. We had a lot of outstanding lunch speakers, a great golf tournament, highly regarded educational studies and a tremendous Tech Expo. I have some BIG SHOES to fill, but I look forward to the challenge.

There are a lot of great activities coming up in the next few weeks and we all should do our best to attend each one of the events.

Lets first start with the ETGS September 16, 2009 luncheon with Dr. John Lorenz our current AAPG President. This will be a special event to hear from our current AAPG President and Dr. Lorenz will be enlighting the ETGS members with the most current AAPG events on both a national and global perspective. Dr. Lorenz earned his BS in Geology and Anthropology from Oberlin College 1972, M.S. from University of South Carolina in 1975 and his PhD. from Princeton University in 1981. Dr. Lorenz joined Sandia National Laboratories in 1981 as a geologist for the Multiwell Experiment in the Piceance Basin studying the sedimentology and natural fractures systems in oil and gas reservoirs. Dr. Lorenz worked for Sandia Labs from 1981 to 2007 studying fractured systems all over the globe. This will be a VERY INTERESTING talk by Dr. Lorenz.

Next we have the ETGS/PTTC one day Workshop on Thursday September 17, 2009 on Log Analysis of Shaly Sands with world renowned Petrophysical Analysis Expert Dr. George Asquith from Texas Tech University. Dr. Asquith holds the Pevehouse Chair and is a Professor of Geosciences at Texas Tech University. He holds a PhD. (1966), a M.S. (1963) from the University of Wisconsin and B.S. from Texas Tech University. He also serves as Professor of Geology at West Texas State University. Dr Asquith industry experience includes ARCO, ALPAR Resources, Search Drilling Company, Pioneer Production and Mesa LTD Partnership where he has worked the Gulf of Mexico, Permain, Anadarko, San Juan, and Williston basins. Dr. Asquith is the author of Basic Well Log Analysis for Geologists, an AAPG Method in Exploration Series publication. This workshop is posted on the ETGS web and will be filling up very quickly. Please sign up as soon as possible.

The next event will be the ETGS Golf Tournament on Monday October 5, 2009 at Eagles Bluff County Club. Again, this will hosted by Nick Pollard and is always a great event to see old rock hounds and meet new rock hounds. Please sign up for this fun event.

Also, please review the ETGS web site for other news and if you have any questions please call or email Barbara Cade at (903) 593-3071 or email at bacade@suddenlinkmail.com. In addition please send in all ETGS DUES and let get current!!
