Abstract

The Strawn Group is an important oil and gas reservoir in the state of Texas. Reservoir facies include both fluvial-deltaic and marine terrigenous siliciclatics and shallow marine carbonates (limestones, dolomites). Primary producing fields span from the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform eastward to the Eastern Shelf, Concho Platform, and Ft. Worth Basin.

This talk presents a brief overview of the lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Strawn Group from the 1930’s to present. Both surface and subsurface units are discussed, since the stratigraphic nomenclature of each differs greatly. Precise correlation between regions is greatly aided by fusulinid biostratigraphy; however, in practice, such data is sparsely available. Previous detailed analyses by Reid and Mazzullo (1987) show that individual Strawn units such as the Caddo Limestone are highly diachronous across the region.

Individual elements of the Strawn petroleum system are also summarized, including an overview of Strawn play types, main reservoir types, source intervals, and traps and seals.
